Black Sheep Coffee
A vibrant “third space” for the city, a place to meet, work, pause or connect
Bates Studio was appointed to design and deliver Black Sheep Coffee’s flagship Glasgow store — a bold new space set within the former Odeon cinema on Renfield Street. Tasked with translating Black Sheep Coffee’s trademark energy into one of the city’s most distinctive historic interiors, the studio transformed a long-vacant landmark into a high-impact destination that blends industrial character, social connection and contemporary café culture.

This project exemplifies Bates Studio’s capability to deliver design solutions that are not only visually compelling but commercially strategic — environments that drive performance, enhance brand impact, and deliver measurable results in competitive urban contexts.
The unit had been closed for almost 20 years and was originally opened in 1934 as the Paramount Cinema (later the Odeon). It was a major Glasgow venue in the 1960s, hosting iconic acts including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix. The Beatles performed there on several occasions and launched their final UK tour at the venue in December 1965. This heritage was an important consideration in how we approached the project.
Given this, retaining key signature features such as the exposed steelwork and riveted structures was central to our vision, while ensuring the space was brought back to life for a new generation.
Working closely with SUR Coffee Group, Bates Studio took on the full internal fit-out and refurbishment of the long-vacant space, which had remained unused for almost 20 years. The challenge lay in balancing the boldness of the Black Sheep Coffee brand with the character of a historic building, creating a space that felt both authentic and contemporary.
The project included new internal layouts to clearly define customer-facing and back-of-house areas, upgraded electrics and comprehensive internal decoration throughout. A bespoke counter and shelving system were designed and sourced specifically for the site, featuring a zinc-wrapped countertop, steel-framed shelving and a corrugated metal frontage with integrated signage — reinforcing the brand’s raw, industrial identity.
Spanning the entire ground floor, the finished café accommodates approximately 120 covers, making it one of the largest coffee shops in Scotland. The scale of the space allowed Bates Studio to amplify Black Sheep Coffee’s social, high-energy atmosphere while maintaining warmth and character through material choice and detailing.
ey architectural features, including exposed steel beams and original industrial elements, were retained and expressed as part of the interior design, aligning naturally with the brand’s aesthetic. Rustic finishes and curated historic photography add texture and depth, grounding the space in its urban context without detracting from the contemporary feel.
The result is a vibrant “third space” for the city — a place to meet, work, pause or connect — and a flagship that firmly establishes Black Sheep Coffee at the heart of Glasgow’s café culture. More than a coffee shop, the project demonstrates Bates Studio’s ability to deliver brand-led environments that are commercially effective, culturally relevant and rooted in their surroundings.
“This was a venue of real historical importance, and it was important for us to retain key signature elements such as the original steel and rivet works. This was Bates’ first project with us and, while it presented some real challenges, we are delighted to have opened the doors to this landmark location on Tuesday the 13th of January 2026.”
